About Me

headshot

Welcome! My name is Srinaath Perangur (most people call me Sri). I'm a musician, writer, and incoming PhD student at the Department of Religion at the University of Toronto.

My research interests center around religious developments in premodern South India. I'm particularly interested in demonology, performing arts (music, dance, literary performance), multilingualism, medieval literary theory, and philosophy of language.

I've been performing and teaching Carnatic (South Indian classical) music for over a decade. A lifelong student of the craft, I'm always seeking to expand my practice through diverse collaborations, reinterpretions of the classical canon, and my own compositions.

I'm also a writer. My poetry and hybrid work, often experimental in form, has been published in several literary magazines, where it has been nominated for awards. When I can, I try to bridge the gap between academia and the public through translations and essays.

Scholarship

"Pitch Perfect: The Dynamics of Theory, Pedagogy, and Practice in Saṅgītaśāstra."

Presentation at the 235th Meeting of AOS / ASPA (2025)

Through close readings of Sanskrit musicological texts supplemented by ethnographic work, this presentation suggests the concept of śruti as a new potential window into how the relationship between textual authority and oral pedagogy might have evolved from premodern India to the present.

Creative Writing

Poetry • Fiction

I love writing poetry and fiction. My current poetry project is a series of "suture sutras" — the stitching together of the speech of female characters from the Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa (the oldest work of Sanskrit literature).
